My research generally focusses on understanding the interaction between social factors and language variation. I investigate regional and socio-cultural variation in varieties of English to understand how they change over time, how the varieties are perceived by others and the effects those perceptions can have for the speakers of the varieties. My research also includes work on sociophonetic (phonological) variation in two indigenous languages - Tlingit and ʔayajuθəm. These projects seek to find better methods for understanding languages with a range of socio-cultural contexts and where there may be limited data.
